Mode of entry:
- Systemic Action: When applied as a foliar spray, soil drench, or seed treatment, the chemical is rapidly absorbed by the plant’s roots, stems, and leaves. It moves upward within the plant (acropetal movement) along with water transport.
- Ingestion (Stomach Action): Pests (like sucking insects) consume the plant sap containing the insecticide and die.
- Contact Action: The insecticide acts directly on the target pests when it is sprayed over them or when they crawl over treated surfaces.
Mode of action:
- Nerve Disruption: Imidacloprid binds to the postsynaptic nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) in the insect's central nervous system.
- Over-stimulation: It mimics acetylcholine, causing continuous and uncontrolled nerve stimulation, which leads to muscle paralysis and eventual death.
- Target Specificity: It binds to insect receptors much more strongly than mammalian receptors, making it highly toxic to pests but safer for mammals at recommended doses.
